Foreword: Florida was not immune to the turmoil of 1864. It saw Jacksonville occupied yet again and a major Union ground effort in north Florida. This campaign ended in the battle of Olustee on Feb. 20th. One of the forgotten legacies of this era was a special census of eastern Florida conducted on the orders of Federal military authorities. Although the motive is unknown, it seems likely to have been part of the work done to help register voters under Lincoln's 10% reconstruction plan. African-Americans living in the region were also enumerated despite the fact that they did not yet have the legal right to vote. It has not been determined exactly when this census was taken. It was never filmed and there are only 4 known copies of the original. The census was broken down as follows: p.1-71: Report of the census of the colored population, Jacksonville, Florida -- p.72-104: Report of the census of the white population, Jacksonville, Florida -- p.105-140: Report of the census of the white population East of the St. Johns River, Duval County, Florida -- p. 141-169: : Report of the census of the white population East of the St. Johns River, Duval County, Florida -- p.170-229: Report of the census of St. Augustine, Florida.
The 1864 military census includes more information about an individual than any others censuses taken during the 1800's.
The vital information that was found in the 12 columns on each individual has been copied as it appears in the original census. Dates and cities weren't recorded consistently and not all lines in the columns were completed. These include: Name, height, eyes, complexion, age, where born or contrabanded, last residence, where registered for draft or former owner, date into department, oath of allegiance no. of rations, remarks.
