Description

Mayport's rich history alters researcher's outlook (Times Union, July 29, 1989) by Mary Hurst, Military correspondent. 2 copies of the article cut from the Florida Times-Union, Community News section plus 2 copies of the Public Affairs Office approval to publish. "Joe Pickett, the Mayport Naval Complex librarian for the past 2 years and an Arlington resident, was asked to compile a history of the area for the base's 50th anniversary next year. The article covers the research he performed and what he discovered about Mayport history. He also interviewed various Mayport residents such as Sid Mickler, Joe and Lenore Brown, and Stoddard Andreu. This was difficult as many older residents in Mayport didn't like or trust the Navy because of the arbitrary way it seemed to take the land in 1940 for the base. He recorded the oral history and decided to start with the group who historically has kept the best historical records -- the church. Other areas of research included the old Spanish cemetery, Elizabeth Philip Stark's headstone, origin of name of Mayport, shipwrecks that carried Spanish gold and silver that still lay inside the mouth of the St. Johns River, etc.
