unpaged : Looseleaf manuscript. Diary of Judge Farquhar Bethune, written to document the weather on his plantation, New Ross, on the St. Johns River located in Duval County. Judge Bethune was a judge in Jacksonville that gave the ruling in the case of Anna Kingsley and her children case concerning their rights to Zephaniah Kingsley's plantation. Also there is a timeline of the Judge's life from when he moved to Florida in 1803 until he sold his land in 1851 on the inside front cover of the weather diary. The journal later reached Dr. A. S. Baldwin who was a weather observer of the Smithsonian Institute. At Dr. Baldwin's death, his executor, Mr. Ambler, a local banker, presented it to Alexander J. Mitchell, Meteorologist, U.S. Weather Bureau for Florida. He, in turn, presented the diary to to the Florida Historical Society, August 6, 1931... Florida Historical Society online collection. This is a plantation weather journal rather than a personal diary. It provides a great deal of information relating to the daily operations of Judge Bethune's New Ross Plantation, although very little about the Judge. The copy owned by JHS was requested by Dena Snodgrass in 1978. The Florida Historical Society provided a copy with the restriction that the photocopy may not be reproduced or used for publication without prior authorization from the Society. In April 2022, The Floridical Historical Society has granted JHS permission to share and reproduce the document per email dated April 13, 2022 from the archivist. Includes letters to and from Dena Snodgrass, regarding the manuscript, and Paul Camp, Assistant Special Collections Librarian for the Florida Historical Society. Shelved in an archival pocket envelope.
