Description

39 pages : illustrations ; 23 cm National railway bulletin by National Railway Historical Society. Volume 58, Number 2, 1993 Continues National Railway Historical Society. Bulletin No month identified nor frequency. Selected content: Gateway to the Sunshine State by Edward A. Ridolph. John Wilkes, president of the Jacksonville Terminal Company, said in 1949 that Jacksonville was the biggest and busiest passenger station south of Washington. The company was incorporated in 1894, organized by 3 regional carriers that would become part of the Florida East Coast, the Atlantic Coast Line and the Seaboard Air Line. The Terminal building opened in 1919 and predated the Florida boom. The building was a 14 column edifice and stood 90 feet high. The waiting room was segregated into separate facilities for white and black passengers. The Company was a steam road for most of its existence. But the Terminal was already dying by 1958 when commercial jet service was inaugurated between Miami and New York. The demise was accelerated a few years later when I-95 was built over the yards. The end came on Jan. 3, 1974 when the Floridian pulled away from an almost deserted station. Selected photographs: Jacksonville Terminal building in 1921 -- Premier train Champion -- Jacksonville Terminal building in 1926 -- No. 16, an Alco product of 1922, switches a heavyweight observation car in the 1940s -- Various train photographs.
