The Virgil Hawkins Florida Chapter of the National Bar Association (VHFCNBA) is continuing efforts that began nearly nine years ago to chronicle the rich legacy of Florida’s first black lawyers. Florida’s First Black Lawyers: The sequel to “Florida’s First Black Lawyers (1869-1979)” will feature biographies and photos of those admitted to The Florida Bar between 1980 and 1989.
Aptly denoted as “trailblazers,” these individuals are a distinguished group, comprised of the first African-American president of The Florida Bar, more than 30 current and retired state and federal judges, two college presidents, legislators, county and city attorneys, general counsels, solo practitioners, professors, and numerous business and civic leaders.
These are the attorneys that inspired me to want to be a part of the legal profession,” VHFCNBA President Ashlee Pouncy said. “With the publication of this book, others will have the opportunity to be educated and similarly inspired.”
The end of the 1980s, the nearly 280 trailblazers represented less than 1 percent of the 44,670 total Bar membership. Still, Pouncy said, these lawyers carried the torch passed to them by their predecessors, becoming the change Florida’s first black lawyers sought. With little opportunity to voice their particular views and concerns, the trailblazers formed many black bar associations that are now prominent in today’s legal landscape and are VHFCNBA affiliate chapters.
I am proud of the Virgil Hawkins Chapter for its continued commitment to ensure future generations know the history of black lawyers’ contributions to improving our society,” said Justice Peggy Quince, who enlisted the aid of VHFCNBA in producing the first volume, while serving as chief justice of the Florida Supreme Court.
The accomplishments of the legends in volume 1 were recognized at a Legacy Gala in 2009. In the same fashion, the trailblazers will be honored at a second Legacy Gala during The Florida Bar’s Annual Convention in Orlando on June 16, 2018.
Everyone is invited to the Legacy Gala to be part of the historic unveiling of ‘Florida’s First Black Lawyers (1980-1989), volume 2,’” said Pouncy.
