The BucaneerDescription
The Buccaneer is a 1958 pirate film made by Paramount Pictures, like the 1938 version, starring Yul Brynner as Jean Lafitte, Charles Boyer and Claire Bloom. Charlton Heston played a supporting role as Andrew Jackson, the second time that Heston played Jackson, having portrayed him earlier in the 1953 film The President's Lady. The film was shot in Technicolor and VistaVision, and took place during the War of 1812, telling a heavily fictionalized version of how the privateer Lafitte helped in the Battle of New Orleans and how he had to choose between fighting for America or for the side most likely to win, the United Kingdom.
The film is a remake of the 1938 film of the same name which starred Fredric March and Akim Tamiroff (Boyer played Tamiroff's role in the remake). The 1938 version was produced and directed by Cecil B. DeMille, but he was seriously ill by the time the 1958 version was made, so he was only the executive producer of that version, leaving his then son-in-law, Anthony Quinn, to direct. It was the only film that Quinn ever directed. Henry Wilcoxon, DeMille's longtime friend, who made frequent appearances in his films, was the actual producer, and DeMille did not receive screen credit, though students of his films would probably find that his touch is obvious throughout the film. Nevertheless, DeMille was unhappy with the film and tried unsuccessfully to improve it; critical response was generally unfavorable, despite some impressive battle scenes.
The movie's supporting cast featured Inger Stevens, Henry Hull, E. G. Marshall, Lorne Greene, Ted de Corsia, Ed Hinton and Douglass Dumbrille.Container

ZAATDescription
Produced and directed by Don Barton.
Story by Lee Larew and Ron Kivett.
"After more than 30 years of seclusion, one of the most frighteningly original monsters in cinematic history has finally returned! ZAAT is the story of a mad scientist who is convinced that a man/fish hybrid is the next step in human evolution. To prove his point he mutates himself into a murderous half human, half catfish and sets out to pollute the rivers and streams of a small Florida town with his deadly formula! Can the agents of the Inter-Nations Phenomena Investigations Team (INPIT) stop this monster before it's to late? ZAAT was produced in 1972 by Barton Film Company in and around Jacksonville, Florida. Now this limited edition DVD returns this destined for cult status creature to a whole new generation of fans!"

A Tribute to George WinterlingDescription
In 1962, when George Winterling began as a meteorologist with Channel 4 television, broadcasts were black and white and reporting was live-no video tape. Prior to his 47 year career at WJCT, Mr. Winterling worked as a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Jacksonville. In 1964, he accurately predicted Hurricane Dora would hit North Florida. He's also known for creating a humiture index-how hot it feels-today used nationwide and beyond as the"heat-index." Rainfall predictability was another Winterling creation. He recalls television's earliest Jacksonville broadcasts in 1949. So eager to see more, later as a student of Florida State University, he mounted an antenna on the chimney and watched Bill Grove's "Eye on the News" from Tallahassee. By the time he retired from Channel 4 in 2009, he was a Jacksonville institution. In this presentation, you'll learn more about Mr. WInterling-known to all as George-and more about North Florida's weather history.Creator

River Into the New WorldDescription
The French Huguenots first saw it. The year was 1564 -- about 60 years before Plymouth was founded. The Huguenots had spent long, ardous weeks sailing across the Atlantic Ocean, and they sailed into the mouth of a large, unknown river... one of the few rivers in the world that flows north.
This documentary film takes viewers on a journey through time and place as we explore the St. Johns River, from its source near the Everglades, following it 310 miles north through Jacksonville, Florida, and into the Atlantic Ocean. Experience the natural beauty, intriguing characters and wildlife of the flattest, slowest moving river in America.Creator

Behind Closed Doors: The Dark Legacy of the Johns CommitteeDescription
On January 19, 1959, investigators summoned geography professor Sigmund Diettrich to the Manor Motel in Gainesville, Florida. Soon after, he was fired from his job and lost the life he loved at the University of Florida. He attempted suicide the same day he was let go from U.F. Hundreds of other professors and students across the state were also terminated or expelled because of their sexual preferences.
Why is this important?
Charley Johns
Many people are familiar with the McCarthy hearings but do not realize that Florida had its own committee designed to weed out communism and homosexual activity. State Senator Charley Johns started the investigations to "protect Florida's children."
The Johns Committee pursued people in academic institutions, courthouse bathrooms and bus stations. The committee's investigators went so far as tapping phones in motels, interrogating children as young as 10, and breaking up a teenage girl's slumber party looking for evidence of moral misconduct.
In 1993 more than 30,000 pages of secret documents became public including a University of Florida administrator's statement that there was no way to prevent gay men from lingering in university bathrooms "unless you pour sulfuric acid on the floor to make people go fast."
Florida State University and the University of South Florida attempted to make things difficult for investigators. But the University of Florida and its president, J. Wayne Reitz, have been criticized for cooperating fully with the Johns Committee.
Some well-known homosexuals on the University of Florida campus remained untouched by the Johns Committee, while others watched their careers end and their families torn apart.
Behind Closed Doors is a documentary produced by Allyson A. Beutke, a graduate of the University of Florida's College of Journalism and Communications. It has aired on PBS stations in Florida and is available for purchase. Email info@behindcloseddoorsfilm.com for ordering information.
The documentary has received a Louis Wolfson Media History Center Film and Video Award. Behind Closed Doorsreceived an honorable mention in the Archival Productions category, and the film was honored an the annual awards ceremony in Miami Beach in May 2001.
The two copies in the collection were donated by the Lynn & Louis Wolfson II Florida Moving Image Archives at Miami Dade College. The copyright is owned by Allison Beutke.Creator

War Stories From the First CoastDescription
Seven World War II veterans describe their wartime experiences. As each reflects on his/her service, the speakers describe specific incidents, but each one also tells how they reacted to their war experience, how serving helped them grow and mature as citizens and the sense of appreciation the war gave them for simply being alive. They describe how working together in their units helped them overcome their fears. The soldiers became a united family of fighters.

The Committee: A New Documentary film about Florida's witch-hunt of LGBT teachers and studentsDescription
The Committee is a documentary film made through a collaboration of University of Central Florida professors and students. In the late 1950s, in response to the McCarthyism and the Red Scare, the Florida legislature created an investigative committee to root out Communists in suspect groups. When this failed, the committee, led by Senator Charley Johns, chose a new target: gay and lesbian teachers and students in Florida's public schools and universities.Creator
