(SIAA) Date not noted on cover but letter from Mayor Curry printed on verso of front cover is dated Nov. 28, 2016. Title from cover. Homes on tour: Alves House, 121 W. Third Street (new) built on lot with address, 125 West 3rd St owned by Nathan Philemon Bryan and wife, Julia. Mr. Bryan had a law practice in Jacksonville starting in 1895 and was active in civic affairs. In 1905, Governor Broward appointed him to to the newly created Board of Control, overseeing Florida's institutions of higher learning. During his 4 years, he pressed successfully for the establishment of a law school at the University of Florida. From 1911 until 1917, Bryan served as U.S. Senator from Florida. In 1920, he became a judge on the U.S. Circuit Court, which he held until his death in Jacksonville in 1935. Nathan's younger brother, William James Bryan, was also an attorney. At one time they were law partners. He and his wife, Janet, also lived in the house, until 1903. -- Holmes House, 1255 N. Laura Street, ca. 1904. First residents were John H. and Pauline Holmes. John Holmes worked for the city of Jacksonville as a superintendent of Construction & Public Buildings. The second residents at this address (then called 1455 Laura Street) were Frank A. and Mary A. Ross and their 2 young sons. Frank was a traveling salesman probably for the Hamilton Brown Shoe Company. By late in 1910, the Ross family had moved to 117 West West 4th and this house was apparently vacant. In 1911 the Kaufman family lived here & are the 1st verified owners of the property. Julius Kaufman was the president of Kaufman Metal Company. Julius died July 8, 1912. His son and wife moved into the house. He later sold the business and started Kaufman Brothers. Co., a wholesale liquor. The current owners are Rosalyn & Derrell Johnson, teachers at Robert E. Lee High School. -- Cheves House, 1210 N. Market Street, ca. 1912. Believe this is the 2nd house on property. In Sept. 1912, James Cheves purchased the property then called 1412 Market Street. Cheves was a real estate agent and operator of of an auto parts store employing his nephew, William Redd. Nancy Ransdell is the current owner. -- McAden House, 112 E. Fourth Street, ca. 1911 built by Hugh F. McAden. The 1st occupants were James R. and Lellie Whelpley followed by Claud W. and Lilly Holmes, followed by Thomas W. and Lena Burnett. In 1917 or 1918, Joel and Esther Rauzin. In 1919, McAden sold the house to Sheldon P. Colson, a railroad conductor, who became the first owner/ occupant of this house. Current owners are Marianna & Mallik Singareddy who own M & M Estate. -- Permenter House, 320 E. Fifth Street, ca. 1909. This house was constructed in 1909. John was owner of a wholesale produce business later expanding to wholesale livestock supplies & groceries, S. Permenter & Company. He and his family lived in this house until 1935. Now the house is owned by Michael & Pat Todd, owners of Sargent Seat Cover Company, Inc. -- Hall House, 315 E. Seventh Street, ca. 1907. Originally this was the home of B. Kemp Hall. He and George Brown were partners in Brown Realty Company, one of Springfield's most prominent home-builders following the 1901 fire. Now owned by Carrie & Adam Wetzel. -- Akra Brothers Dept. Store, 1735 N. Main St., ca. 1933. The 4 Akra brothers fled Lebanon during World War I. Tufic Akra, the oldest, arrived in Jax in 1916. He was a jobber, selling goods from the back of a cart. He was also a partner in the T. Akra & M. Haddad grocery store at 1665 Florida Avenue in East Jacksonville. This store opening was the culmination of the family's retail history in Jacksonville. This store was open for 20 years but then closed down, and the Akra brothers left Springfield. Crispy's is current occupant.
