Mary Avent known as Sister was honored as Child Advocate of the year by the Chidren's Home Society in 1989. She was involved with the Society for decades and served on the Board for 25 years. She grew up on Powell Place, just around the corner from Riverside Avenue and Barrs Street where the home was then located. The children were waiting to be adopted and attended the same school as Mary, West Riverside Elementary School. But Mary couldn't play with them after school. Her friend, Nancy Taylor, years later, asked her to be on the Board. She was also active in St. Marks Episcopal Church. She made her debut with the Jacksonville Debutante Coterie in 1939.Collection
