Description

This is a file of primarily newspaper clippings about Fred Torrible of Mayport. Sun-times article dated Feb. 10, 1982 titled Torrible's adventures still alive in Mayport folklore. Summary: Fred Torrible, one of Mayport's most-renowned sailors, was born in Ireland and became an apprentice seaman. He sailed around the world 2 times before he came to Mayport at 19 years of age. A meeting with Clara Floyd and their marriage in 1883 insured his life-long stay in Florida. He became an apprentice on the pilot boat Willie Wallis. Fred became a fully licensed pilot by 1896 and retired in 1932. Sometimes he worked in his yard with another local character, Ephriam Ford, who was an ex-slave. Following his death on Sept. 11, 1951, the Torrible home served as a rooming house before it was torn down. His daughter Lenora and her husband, the 1st B.J. Strickland, began the restaurant dynasty.
