Description

116 p. illus., facsims., ports. 23 cm. Joyous life of a singer in the era of privilege now gone forever by Lawrence Haynes. JAMM L’Abri. This Italian Renaissance Revival style house built around 1934 in Atlantic Beach was originally built and owned by Broadway legend Lawrence Haynes. In his autobiography, Joyous Life of a Singe, Haynes attributes the name to a phrase used in World War I: “Vite a L’Abri,” which meant “Quick to the place where we are safe – where no harm can reach us. He was an internationally acclaimed singer who performed in the Ziegfeld Follies with Will Rogers and Fanny Brice and palled around with a host of notable figures, including Oscar Hammerstein, Flo Ziegfeld and Winston Churchill. He hosted parties where he would come out in a tux and tails and sing opera. Frank Sinatra even apparently spent time here. The home he built reflected that bon vivant lifestyle with arches, towers and French doors modeled after a French Chateau. He lived in Jacksonville and, when his mother died in 1925, his father had their Jacksonville home razed. He moved with his father to the Park Lane Apartments in Riverside (p.97) and lived there for 6 years. Later he built L'Abri in Atlantic Beach. Photographs or portraits include Ida, his maid and friend -- Portrait as a young man by Violet Oakley -- Lawrence at 9 years old -- Leyden House in Atlanta House for headquarters of General Sherman -- Portrait of Fanny Reed -- Lady Paget -- Program of Cannes 1913 recital held at the Carlton House in Cannes -- Lawrence in Town and Country.
