After completing his medical degree at Northwestern University in 1940 or so, the doctor who was also in the NROTC, was assigned as division medical officer for Destroyer Division 58, part of the Asiatic Fleet. In 1942 he and thousands of service members were captured by the Japanese and became Prisoners of War. .His work as a doctor during three years of captivity was highlighted in a contemporary war novel and he later received four Bronze Star medals, The Purple Heart and Prisoner of War medals. Dr. Berley and his wife later made Jacksonville their home, and he was in a private practice associated with Baptist Hospital for many years.
