He left the Legislature two years later and won a seat in the state Senate as a Republican in 1966, and was minority whip for four years. Bush, Slade became state GOP chairman from 1993 to 1999, picking up the nickname "Boss Slade ."Slade chaired Duval County's Republican Party from 2001 to 2003.
