Selected contents: April meeting, April 19, 1966, 8 p.m., St. Philip's Episcopal Church, 321 West Union Street whose speaker is Attorney Virgil Hawkins, native of Jax who was denied entry to the University of Florida, to talk on "Some guidelines for the way out" -- Slum housing with nearly 30% of homes within city limit of Jax have been classified as either deteriorating or dilapidated by U.S. Census (Of the 19,000 sub-standard dwellings in Jax, 9,000 are occupied by white families and 10,000 by non-white families, Mayor has introduced the Southern Standard Housing Code for passage by the City Council) -- Notes from the President (U.S. Guidelines for school desegration, 1966-1967 ,were released in early March by HEW & consist of revisions of former policies based on Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; As Duval is under Federal Court ordered desegregation the NAACP lawyers will probably have to being the case back to Federal Judge Simpson; Arlington & Wesconnet schools will close in June with pupils assigned to nearby schools) -- G.I. Cold War Bill (Importance of the Veterans Readjustment Benefits Act of 1966 to the Negro veterans in Jax area) -- Minimum Housing Standards Code (Council has repeatedly gone on record as indorsing the Mayor's proposal; If unsatisfactory code adopted, there will be protests by NAACP as slum lords live in Riverside, Old Ortega & points east) -- SCLC on the Jacksonville Scene ( Rev. King's Southern Christian Leadership Conference organized its Jax chapter; supported Daylight Grocery chain employees strike now in 7th month) -- Summer cultural enrichment program had its 1st meeting at the community house of the Bethel Baptist Church on April 2nd) -- 1966 Membership dues -- HRC membership growth (Human Relations Council needs more members, want to double membership in 1966) -- Brewster Hospital (Tell your friends to make use of Brewster Hospital as it deserves our full support & interest) -- More on U.S. Guidelines (Some points that were made clear in the U.S. Guidelines for school desegregation such as transportatio, athletics & clubs, Desegregation of staff).
