Scope and Content

This collection contains photographs and information about William E. Kay and his family, Mr. Kay was the general counsel for one of the railroads - probably the FECR- and that is the reason he moved from Brunswick, GA to Jacksonville, FL. Mrs. Rogers said he send his private railcar to New York to bring back ice cream for his daughter's debut in Jacksonville. Her name was Olivia Key Pope and Mrs. Rogers - this collection's donor - is her granddaughter. Olivia Kay Pope married James Wiley Pope, Jr. from Jacksonville. Colonel Kay's wife was Emma Lucas, her father was the rector of the Episcopal Church in St. Simons Island. Emma and Col. Kay had 13 children - many died in childbirth. They were of the Catholic faith. Colonel Kay died in Jacksonville in 1939. His house, which included a bathroom in the third floor and servants quarters in the back, was demolished for the construction of the Fuller Warren Bridge.
