Scope and Content

Personal papers of Helen Cooper Floyd (1922-1998); Collection includes books, newspaper articles, photographs, and other memorabilia that she had filed and posted in a scrapbook over her lifetime. Most of the material is about Mayport history and the people who lived there. Helen Cooper Floyd was born in Mayport, Florida in 1922. She graduated from Florida State College for Women in 1945, and was a schoolteacher in Mayport, St Simons Island, Georgia, and Mississippi. She was a Mayport historian, and wrote "In the Shadow of the Lighthouse, a Folk History of Mayport, Florida", "Mayport Remembered, Along the Waterfront", and "Mayport Remembered, People and Places". She was an award winning columnist for the Ocean Beach Reporter in Jacksonville Beach, and is recognized for her contributions in Florida folklore, research on the Minorcans and Northeast Florida's commercial fishing industry. She died at her home in Pascagoula, Mississippi, in 1998, and was survived by her husband and seven children.
