"The history of the Jewish community in Jacksonville began in the mid-nineteenth century. Mostly of German descent, these people were merchants or proprietors of small businesses in the dry goods or clothing trades. They were so highly regarded by the Jacksonville community at large that a Jewish mayor was elected in the 1880's. Many other Jewish citizens were business leaders, civic leaders, or held public offices."
