Thomas Howes and his wife, Mary Burr, the progenitors of the Howes family in this country, came from the County of Norfolk, in England, and settled in that part of Yarmouth, now Dennis, known as Nobscusset, about the year 1639. They were in Salem, Mass., two years before, or in 1637, where they first landed. The families are classed in 3 branches: Joseph, Thomas, and Jeremiah. William Luther Howes who lived in Jacksonville for some years is a descendant of the Jeremiah branch. He was originally from Oak Hill, Florida where his father owned and operated a general store. William's obituary states that he studied to be an artist and had illustrated books and magazines for awhile. An example is the book titled "The Heart of Uncle Terry." Later in life he did many portraits including the acting president of Jacksonville University.
