Scope and Content

This collection contains letters, documents and newspapers collected by Josph E. Lee and his wife Rosa. Mr. Lee was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 15, 1849. He received a degree in law from Howard University. He became a lawyer and a minister for the AME Church ( he also had a Doctorate in Divinity). He represented Duval County in the Florida House of Representatives in 1875, 1877 and 1879; in the Florida Senate in 1881. He also served as a Jacksonville Municipal Judge in 1888, as Duval County Clerk of the Circuit Court in 1889, U.S. Collector of the Port of Jacksonville 1890-1894 and US Collector of Internal Revenue for the Florida District in 1897-1913. He died in Jacksonville on March 25, 1920. Fifty (50) addressed envelopes.
