He expressed concern about the integration of Duval Public Schools. Letter is dated June 19, 1963. Letter to the Editor by Richard l. Clark protesting Burns' bid for Governor, dated March 6, 1963. Newspaper article about the dismissal of the libel suit by Haydon Burns against City Councilman John Lanahan dated May 31, 1963. Several internal Times-Union memos show the political climate at the time, and give glimpses into how Burns was perceived by Times-Union staff. Newspaper article about candlelight memorial ceremony for JFK dated December 13, 1963 with internal memo noting Burns' reaction to Times-Union coverage. Also a memo from Burns outlining his election caravan stops in April (no year cited). Letter to the Editor dated October 2, 1961 from a British immigrant named Denis G. Civil Rights Movement 1960-1964Description
These documents are involved with the Civil Rights Movement so many of the documents discuss segregation, the treatment of protestors. Many of these documents have to do with events in Jacksonville along with documents dealing with more national news. There are several articles about a dismissal of contempt charges against Mayor Burns for the closing of city pools. The charges were brought because a group of Negroes thought the pools were closed on the basis of race. There is an anonymous Letter to the Editor defending segregation, using Biblical references to support this position. The letter is postmarked Knoxville, TN January 31, 1963. Times-Union account and internal documents about a picket line around two Negro theaters. The Negroes were protesting the deplorable conditions of the theaters. Dated July 23, 1962. A letter from Frank Hampton, President of the Duval County Citizens Benefit Corporation to the Board of City Commissioners urging them to become members of a bi-racial committee to discuss and solve city wide problems. Dated July 16, 1963. A letter dated July 17, 1963 from C. William Beaufort, President of the Chamber of Commerce which stated opposition to Federal efforts to desegregate the South. A copy of the discussion in Congress regarding the Civil Rights Act of 1964, reprinted from the Congressional Record. Letter to the Editor by T.C. Berry defending segregation dated July 24, 1963. Copy of the Dan Smoot Report dated July 15, 1963 defending segregation and attacking President Kennedy and his policies. The Civil Rights platform of the Communist Party of 1928 is cited in this newsletter from Dallas, Texas. Letter to the Editor from Sudie Mae Lewis of Chicago, Il. advising against integration postmarked July 5, 1963 Jacksonville, Fl. Letter to the Editor from A.J. Resnick dated August 20, 1960 which expressed shock and surprise about the Jacksonville race riots. UPI bulletin dated Aug 18 (no Year) about sit in demonstrations by Negroes at downtown lunch counters. This bulletin goes into detail about these two demonstrations organized by the NAACP. A Special Communication letter from the Northeast Florida Council on Human Relations about an inter-racial committee to enhance communication between the citizens of Jacksonville. This was in response to the sit-ins at the downtown lunch counters. United Press International (UPI) bulletin about bus riders in Jacksonville, demonstrating for civil rights and desegregation with an internal memo attached from E.G. Henson dated June 15, 1961 about the agitators and that "nothing happened." The UPI account is quite lengthy. A letter from the Chamber of Commerce stating that no statement will be made regarding the desegregation of Jacksonville's lunch counters, dated May 15, 1961. UPI dispatches relating the sequence of events during Jacksonville's race riots. Flyer announcing a "Jobs and Freedom" March to be held October 5, 1963 starting at the Bethel Baptist Institutional Church. Hand drawn cartoon of a Negro woman being arrested sent to the Times-Union anonymously postmarked August 5, 1963. Copy of Congressional Record of September 9, 1963 on the remarks of Representative Chet Holifield on Communism and desegregation. Letter to the Editor from Mrs. Francis Bemis dated September 16, 1963 accusing the Times-Union of slanting the news, with an attached internal memo. Results of a June 1963 mailed survey regarding segregation in eating places in Dade County and attitudes about the Public Accommodation Law. Internal Times-Union memo which states Mayor Burns asked them to suppress a news item about an upcoming NAACP parade dated September 24, 1963. Times-Union notes on planned picketing of the Florida Theater in Gainesville by University of Florida students with a plan to extend the protest to the Jacksonville Florida Theater if the theaters are not integrated. No date on this report. Two-page letter about why Negroes are marching for "Jobs and Freedom" in Jacksonville. Newspaper clipping from the Houston Chronicle sent anonymously with the headline, "Humble Negro Barber Marches, Gets Promises From Congressmen," dated August 29, 1963. The article has a handwritten note on it: "What you think of this?" An Editorial from the Detroit Free Press dated August 4, 1963 with the headline: "Cause of Negro Damaged By Unruly Demonstrations." Public Notice from St. Augustine Record dated August 17, 1964 which states all members of the Ancient City Hunting Club are forbidden to harass or intimidate any restaurant owner and their Negro clientele. Notice was posted by Holstead R. Manucy, President, and filed with the District Court Middle District of Florida Jacksonville Division. Letter from T.C. Berry quoting Booker T. Washington postmarked August 11, 1964. The letter says Washington had the answers to the Negroes problems and says it has been hard to watch "that old-time mutual respect & understanding give way to fear, hatred & mistrust." Flyer from Elijah Muhammad, founder of The Nation of Islam about Negro murders by police in Los Angeles sent to the Times-Union anonymously postmarked June 6, 1952. several Negro leaders, particularly Rutledge Pearson and Arnet Girardeau. The article also quotes Mayor Haydon Burns who blamed the race riots on his opponents. The article relates the death of Mrs. Johnnie Mae Chappel who was shot walking home from a grocery store. the article outlines how desegregation unfolded in Jacksonville from 1961 to 1964. Letter to the Editor by Jimmy L. Davis dated March 28, 1964 which states demonstrations are not the way to achieve goals. A Summary analysis of the Civil Rights Bill prepared by the Human Relations Council of Greater Jacksonville written by Assistant Attorney General Burke Marshall. An inflammatory flyer by the Duval County Federation For Constitutional Government which states the Civil Rights Act is a "Blueprint for Dictatorship." It has a cartoon of LBJ ordering Federal bureaucrats to fire weapons at John Q. Public. The flyer has nine arguments against the Civil Rights Act. The Federation for Constitutional Government sent to the John Walters a letter with a newspaper article attached from the Augusta Courier which praised George Wallace. The Headline read "Race Riots in U.S. Communist Plots, New Hampshire Newspaper Editor Says" The newspaper with the Confederate Flag logo also praises Barry Goldwater. File contains newspaper clipping from The Pittsburg Courier about race relations in Jacksonville, Fl. Rutledge Pearson, head of Jacksonville NAACP was interviewed for the article. The article was received Feb. 1, 1964. Also, contains a letter to John A. Santora, Judge of the Municipal Court in Jacksonville, Fl. dated March 20, 1964 from Rutledge Pearson, head of the NAACP and teacher in the Duval County Public Schools which explained the African-American position regarding Civil Rights and the effects of "criminalization' on the Negro Community. Rutledge objected to Santora's statement that appeared in the March 17, 1964 issue of the Jacksonville Journal which Rutledge said seemed to indicate that Santora was willing to punish Negro youth severely for merely sitting in a public place or trying to shop or eat in a restaurant. Article from The Atlanta Journal and Constitution dated June 28, 1964 written by Mrs. Cora Walker, a Negro Attorney who worked in New York City's Harlem. Mrs Walker stated that Negros needed to develop the necessary leadership to move forward with Civil Rights and to achieve parity with White people. She urged "eternal vigilance and hard work." Anonymous letter objecting to coverage of Negroes in the Times-Union with newspaper clippings with a picture of Cassius Clay (Muhammad Ali) and another article about Frank Pinder, food and agriculture officer of the U.S. Agency for Internal Development mission to Ghana. Pinder was a Florida native. The letter is postmarked Feb. 22, 1964. Letter from T.J. Campbell which states that the National Council of Churches "helps finance, recruit and train persons to ferment racial turmoil in the south." Eloquent Letter to the Editor of The Jacksonville Journal from Mrs. Victoria Dixon defending the Negro quest for Civil Rights and equal treatment. Another letter from Blucher Blair dated June 23, 1964 not intended for publication that objected to the newspapers using the name Martin Luther King, Jr. dated June 23, 1964. Letter from the NAACP replying to charges of Communism within the NAACP. Letter was from Rep. George B. Stallings, Jr. Contains statement made before the Jacksonville City Council. Stallings challenged the NAACP to dispute charges of Communism which were entered into the Congressional Record of the United Sates Congress. Letter from Rutledge Pearson, Head of the NAACP is attached. His response includes, "It is a well-known fact that the KU Klux Klan...is on the United States Attorney's List of subversive organizations." Newspaper clipping is attached. Another letter from Mary Louis Bennet, dated April 10, 1964 in support of a polio victim who gave support to Mrs. Peabody, whose son was the Governor of Massachusetts. This unnamed woman was selected by Florida Memorial College for recognition in her work on behalf of Civil Rights. Another letter from D.S. Ashdown which stated "We find it impossible to reconcile the practices...of the white population with Christianity. The letter stated "white people kill colored people in the U.S." The letter was dated April 2, 1964. Soul Force, the Official Journal of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference dated May 1, 1968 is enclosed. The cover has silhouette of Martin Luther King on the cover, and the publication was written in the aftermath of King's assassination. Some of the articles are concerned with how the Black community can continue going forward from this time and event. A copy of a letter written to Pope Paul VI from (Mrs.) Ann.M. Lloyd which objected to priests and nuns marching with Civil Rights activists during the Selma and Montgomery, Al. Second letter from Mrs. Lloyd was written to Rep. Charles Bennett objecting to the KKK being investigated. A letter from Bill Bowen, a newspaper reporter for an unnamed newspaper in Tallahassee postmarked April 5, 1965 in which he wrote it was becoming difficult for him to report on "racial news." In his letter, he mentions a UPI Dispatch for Editors Only in which states 6 homemade bombs found in Birmingham, Al. by U.S. army demolition experts found them to be "un-operative." Bowen speculates that the bombs were planted by Negroes instead of the KKK. He goes on to cite a riot that happened in Cleveland, OH. at a school. He complained that CBS News with Harry Reasoner did not spend enough news time on the school riot and devoted more coverage to the Selma march for Civil Rights. An anonymous letter to Governor Farris Bryant (Florida)protesting a Federal employee named Simpson for enforcing Civil Rights. The letter contains many curse words and accuses the Federal government of being a dictatorship. There is no date on the letter. A handwritten anonymous letter from a Negro explaining the plight of the Negro population. There is no date on the letter. A letter to Robert R. Feagin, President of Florida Publishing Company from Lawrence Lewis Jr. which had attached an editorial about Stokely Carmichael returning to the U.S. from Cuba after being barred from England. The Editorial is titled "Lock 'em Up". Lewis encourages Feagin to print a similar Editorial in the Times-Union. A report filed by F.T. MacFeely about Black Power Spokesman H. Rapp Brown and Gov. Claude Kirk "competing for the attention of 800 Negroes Wednesday night and Kirk lost." Two competing news services filed reports, the Associated Press and UPI, United Press International. A Resolution of Protest to the United Fund of Jacksonville from the Human Rights Council of Jacksonville which protested the practice of the United Fund collecting donations and contributing money to three agencies which refused to desegregate their facilities. The three agencies were Daniel Memorial Home, Pine Castle Day School and Workshop, and the Young Men's Christian Association (YMCA) at their four branches in Jacksonville. Interview Rutledge Pearson NAACP head from the Philadelphia Sunday Bulletin dated May 16, 1965. Statement of Joseph P. Averill regarding the Burt incident which occurred on Oct. 31, 1966. Averill was a newspaper reporter, and he gives a detailed account of the racial incident between blacks and whites. The whites were taunting Negro children and provoking them, then they wanted the two reporters present to arrest the Negro children for cussing. Avrill reported that the whites then cussed at the reporters for Jacksonville's news coverage. Letter from Sen. Spessard L. Holland sent to Howard H. Jackson and forwarded by Jackson to John Walters at the Times -Union. Jackson wrote to Senator Holland denigrating the Negro race and voiced his opposition to Civil Rights Legislation. Sen. Consolidation 1961-1967Description
These documents deal with the consolidation of Jacksonville. Some of them talk about the benefits of consolidation. Others documents show a fear that consolidation would be the breakdown of American values and a pathway to communism. It also includes the official Jacksonville- Duval area Planning board document about its history, purpose, goals, success, and membership. File includes a pamphlet from MARAH, Inc titled "A Warning to American Citizens," detailing the dangers of consolidation and Metro government. This citizens group claimed Metro government would lead to Communism. The pamphlet was sent to John Walters, and both the pamphlet and letter discuss Urban Renewal and Home Rule. The pamphlet also discusses the role of the Ford Foundation, and list 20 groups responsible for Metro planning and financed by the Ford Foundation out of Chicago Il. The pamphlet claims Metro is not Home Rule, and violates State's Rights. The Committee For The Preservation of the Constitution was responsible for the pamphlet. File has copy of State Constitution Article VIII Sections 1-10A regarding the election of county officers, and the establishment of municipalities in Florida. Newspaper clipping from the Times-Union dated November 15, 1961 about money set aside by the City Council to study annexation. Results of a straw ballot conducted by WPDQ on annexation. The polling showed that Western suburbanites wanted to become part of the city of Jacksonville while Eastern residents wanted no part of it. People who lived in the city were overwhelmingly in favor of annexation. The poll has statistics, and comments from residents and was conducted December 5, 1962. Mayor Haydon Burns received criticism. A copy of the Times-Union Sunday Magazine dated March 29, 1959 titled " Annexation- 'Open Sesame' to Municipal Growth" is enclosed. A Full-page article from the Tampa Tribune dated February 5, 1967 titled "the Course of Consolidation," discusses efforts in Escambia, Orange, Pinellas, Sarasota, Palm Beach, and Duval counties. The section on Duval discusses the disaccreditation of the public schools, tax bills based on 100 percent valuation, and scandals in City Hall and Courthouse. File contains anonymous Letter to the Editor with garbage pickup complaints postmarked August 14, 1961. Letter from Townsend Hawkes, Jacksonville Realtor and Building Firm dated July 26, 1967 with two attachments of luxury homes in Miami, Dade County with a comparison between the high taxes in Duval County compared to the lower taxes in Miami. These issues deal with annexation and zoning changes and includes a newspaper article, and letter and plan from the Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce. These changes had to occur because of consolidation. The Barry report to Walters dated April 4, 1963 outlines the city's annexation powers. The Jacksonville Chamber of Commerce sent to all its members a copy of Senate Bill No. 986 regarding zoning changes. A copy of the Senate Bill is enclosed in folder. Newspaper article dated January 21, 1968 tells residents how to get property rezoned step by step. Letter to Gov. Farris Bryant dated August 30, 1962 protesting the rezoning on "the last scenic drive to Ft. Caroline Monument." Letter was sent by Guy J. McGarity and sent to Rep. Charles A. Bennett, State Sen. Most of these documents are criticizing the current state of the criminal justice system. File includes anonymous typed letter postmarked Green Cove Springs October 11, 1963 attacking Castro and Cuba, Catholics, Jews and Protestants comparing American freedom with the destruction of Greece, Rome, and Babylon. Letter has a poem by "Dumbfellow" praising the Bible. A letter alleging misconduct in the Sheriff's Department sent anonymously dated February 1, 1967. Letter from A.S. Gibson postmarked January 24, 1965 in defense of Capt. Duggan of the police department and alleging misconduct by Judge Layton and Mr. Booth in the conduct of the case against Capt. Duggan. The letter also criticizes Dale Carson for paying a "negroe gambler Hodges McGee" for testimony in the case. Letter from Andrew B. Whooper postmarked April 4, 1962 protesting bad conditions in the Duval County Jail. A copy of a speech given on "News and Public Relations" to the Florida Probation and Parole Association dated June 21, 1962. The speech contains several anecdotes about the criminal justice system for adults and juveniles. The speech also contains listing of how much space the Times-Union devotes to various subjects. Letter to Roy Russell of Florida Probation and Parole Commission dated June 21, 1962 outlining results of a poll of businesses on whether they would hire a convict. Letter also makes recommendations to the Commission. Internal Times-Union document dated 12/3/1963 on exemption rules for jury duty for newsmen and judge's attitudes towards newsmen serving on juries. Letter dated July 17, 1962 from Miss Barbara Johnson explaining that she is an ex-convict from a crime she committed as a juvenile. She complained of the "backwardness and corruption" existing in the women's prison system. Johnson blamed Superintendent Harvey West, who had charges brought against him in 1959, and the directions given by Tallahassee for the abuses and poor conditions. Letter from Roland S. Haurent protesting and describing conditions at the City Jail Prison Farm dated February 13, 1961. Memo dated March 15, 1964 from Mrs. Eleanor W. Hooper to daily and weekly newspapers in Florida regarding the Florida Parole Commission. Criminal Justice System- Juvenile Delinquents 1961-1962Description
This folder contains a series of short stories about juvenile delinquents called "Somebody's Boy," edited by Judge Walter Scott Criswell and issued by the National Juvenile Court Foundation along with letters written in response to these weekly publications from 1961-1964. A letter from the Florida Council of Juvenile Court Judges with two "Somebody's Boy" publications attached from September 9, 1961 and April 5, 1958. A listing of the judges on the Council and their Florida locations is on the letterhead. Letter to Judge Walter Scott Criswell from Arthur G. Dozier, Acting Superintendent of The Florida School For Boys at Marianna. The letter references a letter written by Criswell to Henry Young, a boy at the facility. The letter also relates the story of a boy who after reading one of the "Somebody's Boy" publications, murdered a young girl. Dozier states he thinks with the proper care the boy can be rehabilitated and become "a productive member of society." A flyer with a Tribute to the Memory of James C. Lanier written by Criswell is enclosed in folder. Newspaper clipping from the Tampa Tribune dated April 12, 1962 about the eulogy for Criswell by Judge W. Troy Hall Jr. which said that Criswell was the "Judge Emeritus of the Juvenile Courts of Florida." A copy of the "Digest: The Prevention and Control of Delinquency In Duval County," by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency presented by Fredrick Ward, Jr. on April 3, 1962 is enclosed. This document discusses services for children, the absence of protective services, and the funding for children's services. A letter from Charles B. Norton, Chairman of the Community Planning Board of the Community Chest-United Fund of Jacksonville and Duval County which advocated the use of studies done by a citizen's committee, "Services to Children Away from Home" in Duval County in 1960, and the "Digest" study done by the National Council on Crime and Delinquency in setting up Public Welfare agencies for dependent children, and separating them from delinquent children. The officers of the Community Chest are listed on the letterhead. The letter was also sent to the Duval County Budget Commissioners: Carl D. Langston, Basil J. Walker, Joe E. Sessions, Joseph G. Kennelly, Jr., and Edward I. Acosta, dated March 8, 1962. A Resolution by the Zonta Club, a women's service club in favor of the construction of a new improved shelter for juvenile delinquents. The letter mentions the two studies, and the efforts of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. Letter to Judge Lamar Winegeart from the National Council of Jewish Women, Jacksonville Section in favor of the recommendations of the National Council on Crime and Delinquency and in favor of more foster homes in Duval County. Letters, newspaper articles, papers from the Florida Waterways Association and the Association of American Railroads. Estimation of cost and profit are also included in some of these documents. Times-Union article about Canal dated February 14, 1965 with map and discussion of tax issues. The article discusses the politics involved and the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND). South Florida politicians wanted to abolish FIND. A pamphlet by the Citizen's For The Conservation of Florida's Natural and Economic Resources, Inc. is enclosed. The pamphlet has a summary of the natural resources that would be destroyed by the construction of the waterway. a pamphlet by The Canal Authority of Florida in favor of the Cross-Florida Barge Canal for recreation and sports activities, conservation areas, and flood control. The pamphlet also has numerous pictures and has census projections for the state of Florida. Copy of a presentation prepared by the Canal authority of Florida in conjunction with several groups including the U.S. Corps of Engineers, Florida Department of Conservation, State Game and Fresh Water Fish Commission, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service; the presentation labels the Barge Canal as economically justified. Article from the Orlando Sentinel dated September 12, 1961 discusses attempts to get money for the Barge Canal project. Internal Times-Union memo is attached. The folder includes a short pamphlet about Duval Engineering Company which gives its financial data, accomplishments and important administrators. It also includes a letter about a law suit against the company in 1961. The letter was released by Rep. William C. Cramer which he received from Maj. General Keith R. Barney about the action taken against Duval Engineering and Contracting Co. by Loudhailer Industries. Maj. General Barney was acting Chief of the Corps of Army Engineers, and the letter is dated September 25, 1961. A copy of remarks given by Rep. Cramer to the House of Representatives on August 9, 1961 regarding the lawsuits against Duval Engineering and Contracting. Rep. Cramer maintains that the company had a "long and shabby history of cheating the government."Container

Many felt the quality of education had gone down in the city. There are several responses to Florida Times-Union articles involving Jacksonville's education system. Most are complaints, but some are also plans for improvement. From these letters, some felt the Times-Union wrote about education negatively. Letter from Jean I. Benjamin, Chairman of the Duval County Budget Commission to Gov. Haydon Burns dated October 29, 1965 proposing an added sales tax instead of higher property taxes to fund Duval County schools. These documents are related to environmental issues in Florida. Many of them focus on the impact of erosion and pollution, especially water and pollution. Letter to Paul Mains and Times-Union from Margaret Wilson Shifflette, Executive Vice -President of the Suwannee River research, educational, and Religious Center protesting Times-Union coverage of pollution in the area and Federal control over the River which had been under State control. Letter is dated May 27, 1967 and was sent to Gov. Claude Kirk, Jr., Herbert Brown, Chairman of the Suwannee River Authority, John C. Camp, Chairman, Authority Pollution and Zoning Committee, and Maywood W. Chesson, Jr., President, Occidental of Florida. Letter from the Florida State Board of Health to Mayor Louis Ritter dated August 19, 1965 advising the "pollution from the tributaries of the St. John's River such as McCoy Creek be completely removed" and sent to a treatment plant. Editorial from the Gainesville Sun dated June 6, 1967 which said the Suwannee River had been "abandoned to rapacious special interests." It also contains an Index for all 1964 articles by volume and number. Article from the St. Petersburg Times dated June 2, 1963 about Florida's vanishing beaches and beach erosion projects. Editorial from Times-Union dated October 28, 1968 titled "Everglades Problem Is Urgent." Article from The Economist dated November 16, 1963 titled "Clearing The Air." Several copies of articles from 1962-1964 about the desert like conditions of the Green Swamp which fed Central Florida's rivers are enclosed with internal Times-Union memo dated February 24, 1964 attached. Letter from Lee Burnham regarding pollution from the Ewell Engineering Company which put an asphalt plant within 3,000 feet of a residential area. The letter complains about the air pollution and noise pollution. Burham asks for the Times-Union to report on the story. Copy of speech by Rep. John P. A sermon from Charles White McGee, pastor of the Unitarian Church of Jacksonville dated June 7, 1964 which contained serious indictments against Jacksonville's religious climate, press, housing, and education. Rev. McGee thought the sermon should be published. A letter from Doyle Morgan dated December 10, 1963 to John Walters informing him of "HillSpeak," an Episcopal Book Club with over 9,000 members, and which enclosed a copy of "The Anglican Digest" and a pamphlet on "Operation Unlimited." A copy of a Saturday Evening Post article by Henry A. Buchanan and Bob W. Brown with the headline, "The Ecumenical Movement Threatens Protestantism." The article was published October 24, 1964. File contains the Introduction to an unpublished manuscript by Henri d'Orgelys about the Christian persecution of Jews throughout the centuries, and the Holocaust. Manuscript is titled "I Shall Never Return." d'Orgelys escaped Nazi persecution in 1940, came to the U.S. and worked as an engineer on the Norden bombsight and other military inventions. Premo called it the worst highway in the county, and there is a handwritten note to pass the letter to the Editorial Department for publicity. A News Release about the merger of United Airlines and Capital Airlines is enclosed. An article dated December 1966 from the magazine Highway User titled "Alan S. Boyd: A Profile" is enclosed. Boyd was selected to head the newly created Department of Transportation. The Florida Times-Union newspaper article dated February 8, 1965 with the headline, "I-95 Is Pushing Southward, Paralleling First Road Constructed by Spaniards." The newspaper has a map and black and white photos as well. Attached is a letter dated February 9, 1965 from the Brunswick and Glynn County Development Authority of Brunswick, GA about the I-95 expansion. The Development Authority was enthusiastic about the new development. The letter was from the Chairman, Carley Zell. The file contains a letter dated August 17, 1964 from Jay W. Brown, a State Highway Engineer with the Florida State Road Department expressing concern that Florida would lose Federal funds for highway projects because of the lag in community planning processes. The letter was sent to Mr. Craig Lindelow, the Executive Director of the Jacksonville- Duval Area Planning Board. The letter warned Mr. Lindelow that the Florida State Road Department would strictly adhere to Federal guidelines. The letter is in response to media inquiries by the Times-Union and UPI regarding a dispute. Mr. Ball suggested collective bargaining instead of arbitration on the dispute. A Summary of Gross Earnings of the Florida Turnpike from 1957 to 1963 by the Florida State Turnpike authority is in file. A Letter to the Editor dated February 5, 1966 from Cooper B. Gordon criticizing the Jacksonville Journal coverage of an airplane crash in Tokyo, Japan which killed 133 people. Gordon accused the Times-Union of bias and claimed the newspaper failed to report on a train wreck which damaged many 1966 automobiles. The Jacksonville Journal newspaper clippings are attached. Newspaper clipping, internal memo, and a letter dated June 12, 1961 regarding the hunger strike of businessman and former featherweight boxing prize fighter Edward Brady. Brady was protesting the Florida State Department plans to combine U.S. Hwy 301 and 441 north of Ocala into a single highway which would divert traffic for 16 miles. Numerous businesses would be affected. Brady also said if the hunger strike did not work, he would give up his citizenship and move to another country. A letter dated October 31, 1960 from the Reddick Highway 441 Improvement Association is enclosed. The letter is to the Fellow Citizens of Marion County thanking them for the big turnout at the public hearing about the proposed merger of Hwy 301 and Hwy 441. This folder contains an Editorial dated Dec. 6, 1961 which states the Community Chest-United Fund was 250,000 dollars short of its 1961 goal. A letter from George Adams, age 92, is undated and relates several stories about elderly people trying to live on 40.00 dollar a month Social Security payments. Adams stated that he knew several people who went hungry and could not afford warm clothes in the winter. Adams wrote he could not contribute to the United Fund. A Times-Union article is included that has the list of Division quotas and amounts raised for the yearly drive. A letter from the Boys' Home Association dated March 29, 1965 that protests the "Non-discrimination Standard for the Federal Fund-Raising to the Florida Board of Regents Program." The letter states the Boys' Home "is only for white orphan boys, not colored ones." File includes reporter Crain's newspaper galley that states "the United Fund will be prohibited from seeking contributions from Federal or military personnel unless the agencies receiving funds certify they operate without racial discrimination." Vietnam War 1965-1967Description
Three letters from military service men stationed in Vietnam are in folder. One dated June 7, 1966 expressing appreciation to the radio station WAPE for sending a tape of the top ten songs in the U.S. to the naval aircraft carrier USS Ranger. The second dated June 7, 1966 is from a Marine requesting any girl between the ages of 17-23 write to him and his buddies. The main question the Marine had was what did American girls look like now? The third is a letter from an Army GI telling about the conditions in Vietnam, and includes a poem he wrote. The GI's name was PFC William H. Daughtry. File has a complaint letter dated October 31, 1967. The complaint is about the Times-Union reprint of an article that appeared in The Periscope about demonstrations at the Democratic Convention in Chicago, IL. The reader accused the Times-Union of one-sided coverage. File has a newsletter dated February 6, 1967 titled "News from South Africa," about a dispute on the cancellation of shore leave for U.S. sailors. A letter dated February 5, 1967 to Sen. Everett Dirksen from a sailor that detailed the effect of the cancellation of shore leave in South Africa had on the servicemen. A Letter to the Editor postmarked August 19, 1966 with a poem about Vietnam is in file. A Letter to the Editor that had attached a letter from her brother stationed in Vietnam. The letter is dated February 14 (no year given) and her brother, SP4 John Wallskey Jr.'s letter is dated February 2 (no year given) and it told the details of an attack by the Viet Cong on American forces. Attached to the two letters is a newspaper clipping from the Jacksonville Journal with the headline "Napalm Maker Explains Role." The article stated there were anti-war demonstrators at the Dow Chemical spokesman's speech at the University of Iowa. A letter of complaint dated August 5, 1965 about the Times-Union coverage of Vietnam and its civilian casualties is in the file.
