Two brothers of the Bruce family lived in St. Augustine, Florida and were stationed here as Union soldiers during the Civil war in 1862, and returned their to live. The Bruce family, beginning with Elisha in 1864, became part of the St. Augustine community bringing with them skills, tools of their trade, a good work ethic, and moral values. They were active in public affairs, serving in several different offices. There are decendents of the Bruce's currently living in St. Augustine, Bayard, Palm Valley, Jacksonville and its environs. There are also decendants who migrated back to the New England area. Frederick William Bruce lived in Arlington. and served as member of the Board of Trustees for South Jacksonville. Later he was employed as chief engineer by the Port of Commissioners of Jacksonville to design and build the Jax Municipal Terminals. He also designed and constructed the Merrill-Stevens Shipbuilding Company plant in south Jax. He helped to organize the Alderman Realty Co. which developed Arlington. He is buried at the Arlington Cemetery. Cleve Powell was a descendant and lived in Arlington.
