Description

65 p. front., plates The story of a young man named Paul Manners who moves to one of the Barrier Islands off the Florida coast and lives in a house in the woods. While hunting one day he meets a beautiful young island woman named Rose Lichen who is blind. The two fall in love and marry. One day Paul is called to the mainland on business. While there he has dinner at a German couple's house and their beautiful daughter plays the piano and sings for Paul. He is enchanted by her music and decides he must return again to hear her play. On his second visit an outbreak of yellow fever breaks out on the island and he cannot return. Rose thinks he has left her and dies of her heartbreak. The book is illustrated with 4 handsome tissue-guarded plates by A.W. Currier of tree-lined island backroads. Some of the photographs are identified as Fort George Island.. It is possible that E.W. stands for Ethlyn Wilmit or Wilmot but can't be sure.
