Description

102 pages : illustrations ; 28 cm Margaret B.Long: Jewel of Jacksonville by James Cocke. "Margaret B. Long was arguably the most influential woman in the history of Jacksonville, Florida. A home economist, she supervised the Duval County Schools home economics department for forty three years. In 1947 she was appointed Supervisor of Homemaking Education which included both whites and Negro homemaking, general and vocational, in Jax and Duval County. More importantly, she wrote daily columns about food and family for the Florida Times Union. During World War II, her columns helped people deal with the war as she shared her wit and knowledge and ended each article with a recipe that dealt with food shortages and rationing. She was a member of the National Defense Council. Everything she did was with poise and grace, and always included a smile and a laugh. Not only was she the life of the party, she knew how to throw one. From a simple barbeque to a formal gathering, she was a master at making people feel welcome." - back cover. Many of her FTU newspaper columns are reproduced along with numerous photographs of her.
