Description

This is an oil on canvas portrait of Hortense de Beauharnais Bonaparte (1783-1837) by or after François Pascal Simon Gérard. She was a friend and classmate of Eliza, Monroe's oldest daughter. This portrait was a gift to Hortensia Hay from Queen Hortense of Holland. In this portrait, the sitter is wearing a blue gown with puff sleeves. The sleeves are accented with gold and white transparent trim. The dress is belted with a gold belt. The sitter is wearing pearl earrings, a pearl necklace, and a pearl and gold crown or tiara. The sitter is also wrapped in a white shawl with multi-colored trim. The sitter is wearing her brown hair up with bangs.
