This is an oil on canvas portrait of George Hay, the husband of Eliza Monroe (Monroe's eldest daughter). Hay is depicted turned slightly to his right. He is wearing a brown, double-breasted coat with six yellow metal buttons, white waistcoat, white shirt, and white neck cloth tied around neck. Hay is wearing his own hair, swept forward. The portrait was not signed or dated but was probably painted by Cephas Thompson (1775-1856) between 1809 and 1810 in Richmond, Virginia.
