Bedstead with motif of feathers and palm leaves on four posts; Mahogany birch rails, tester poplar and white pine veneered with mahogany. American Classical style.
Provenance: James Monroe by bequest to Samuel and Maria Hester Monroe Gouverneur by descent till purchased by Jay Winston Johns for Ash Lawn.
Note: The bed hangings were renewed in mid 2010 to accurately reflect the Monroe period. Designed based on period sources and fabricated by Sarah Cowan and Jody Ellis of Fredericksburg, VA.
