Description

Bedstead with motif of feathers and palm leaves on four posts; Mahogany birch rails, tester poplar and white pine veneered with mahogany. American Classical style. Provenance: James Monroe by bequest to Samuel and Maria Hester Monroe Gouverneur by descent till purchased by Jay Winston Johns for Ash Lawn. Note: The bed hangings were renewed in mid 2010 to accurately reflect the Monroe period. Designed based on period sources and fabricated by Sarah Cowan and Jody Ellis of Fredericksburg, VA. 1974.001.016 and 1974.001.017 displayed together.
