Description

This is a mahogany commode with a green marble top. It has four drawers with stamped brass knobs. (Seven knobs are original; one is a replacement.) This commode was made by Washington, DC, by a cabinetmaker for the James Monroe White House circa 1818. The commode was signed by the cabinetmaker on the dust board, where there is also an address and Masonic symbols. This commode descended in the Monroe family through the Gouverneur-Hoes line of Washington, DC.
