This mahogany armchair was made for the President's House, Washington, D.C. It was made by William King, Jr (1771-1854), Georgetown, Washington DC, about 1818. The secondary woods are ash and maple. The chair sits on gilt brass castors and has been upholstered using a reproduction green fabric with gold design. This chair was likely part of a set of four sofas and 24 chairs the Monroes ordered for use in public space.
