Description

This is a generally rectangular platter that is has eight long sides. The platter is decorated with a blue and white transfer-printed design that commemorates the historic visit of Revolutionary War hero, the Marquis de Lafayette, to the United States, in 1824-1825, during Monroe's presidency. The platter reads: "Landing of General Lafayette at Castle Garden, New York in 1824" and depicts cannons firing over ships in a harbor. This platter descended in the family of James Monroe.
