Description

"Quaker Lady" doll. Victorian-era female doll representing a Quaker woman, with papier-mache head, painted blue eyes and brown hair and bonnet. Stuffed kid body with wooden lower limbs dressed in faded green silk dress and shawl. Patterned paper strips at each joint. Circa 1845-1860. According to a note with the box for doll: "The little 'Quaker Lady' was dressed, it is thought, by Mrs. Hannah McCormick Taylor, great-granddaughter of Dr. and Mrs. John McCormick who built the 'White House' near Summit Point. She gave it to her cousin Eliza Lee Griggs Timberlake, great- great-granddaughter of Joseph Lupton.... The doll must be more than a hundred years old. It was presented to the Historical Society by Mrs. Keightley Wilson, great-great-great- granddaughter of Joseph Lupton and also Dr. [and Mrs.] John McCormick."
