Description

Exhibit titled "A Celebration of Iron". Includes two modern photos of remains of Vestal's Furnace and two modern photos of remains of Shenandoah Furnace. Also includes four illustrations of the iron making process, an illustration of the Federal Armory at Harpers Ferry, and two illustrations of boating on the Patowmack Canal. In addition there is a map of iron furnaces in the area and a color illustration of an iron furnace. There are also three pieces of slag from a furnace, a large piece of iron ore, a rough piece of pig iron, two pieces of limestone, and two pieces of blue-green slag, one darker and smaller than the other. Included are eight blacksmith-made nails, a railroad spike, and a horseshoe. Included are three photos of Dr. Dickinson's older exhibit of iron making that was in the Jefferson County Museum a few years before 2011.Also included is a piece of charcoal and copies of images from the JCM collection that were part of the "Forging Ahead" iron industry exhibit at Jefferson County Museum between 2016 and 2018.
