This is a collection of news articles of which have appeared in various newspapers which describe a general attitude towards Blacks and some events that occurred in Jefferson County. Included are articles outlining the accomplishments of Blacks. There will be information contained in these articles showing the acquisition of church properties, properties for schools and incidents that occurred in the criminal system. Some of the articles also give information about John Brown's raid on Harpers Ferry. Also described are some of the regressive laws of the Virginia General Assembly, and the West Virginia State Legislature.
The collection is intended to give a clearer picture of the difficulties slaves and freed Blacks endured in this county, state; as well as when this county was part of Virginia. This information can be used as a teaching tool to show that despite the inhuman treatment and the obstacles Blacks were subjected to, they still acheived and became outstanding citizens.Acquisition
