George Washington hunting with Lord Fairfax and his brother Col. Fairfax
By H.B. Hall after drawing by Felix Octavius Carr Darley (1822-1888)
"The scene is in western Virginia, and may well be Jefferson County (or simply the upper Shenandoah Valley as it would have been known at the time). Washington, at 16, first came here with a surveying party sent by Lord Fairfax, soon acquiring 500 acres of land in the region.
Darley was an important painter of historic scenes, genre, and portraiture in the mid-18th century. He was above all well known as an illustrator - and for the works of Washington Irving, Cooper, Dickens, Francis Parkman, Longfellow, among others. He also provided drawings for Currier & Ives, esp. the famed "American Farm Scenes," a set of four prints, in 1860."Acquisition
