IMG2862Description
View of lower town Harpers Ferry from the old armory grounds. In 1892 the B&O Railroad acquired a right-of-way across the old armory grounds from Thomas E. Savery and constructed a 20 foot high bank to support its tracks. This photograph is taken near the newly constructed passenger station. Seen on the left along Potomac Street are various shops including the White Horse Saloon. Houses which are part of Marmion Row are shown in the upper left. In the foreground is the granite obelisk placed by the railroad in 1895 to mark the original location of the armory fire engine and guard house, which is better known as John Brown's Fort. Also visible are five battle markers placed in 1892 by the Antietam Battlefield Board which explain the relationship of the capture of the Union garrison at Harpers Ferry by Confederate troops under General Thomas J. Jackson on September 15-16, 1862 just before the Battle of Sharpsburg (MD) on September 17, 1862. The Hilltop House Hotel is visible in the upper right corner.Acquisition
