The donor claims that Ellifritz likely collected the core of rock with the permission of NPS during the installation of a post near Jefferson Rock, probably for the wayside installation on the NW side of the Jefferson Rock site. Ellifritz started his own rock museum in Jefferson County in the latter part of the 20th century. The red sandstone piers lifting the rock were installed by the US Armory in 1859Acquisition
