Standard size rural delivery tin mailbox. Holder on both sides for name. Original flag for mail pick up has been replaced with a heavy piece of wire. Front is heavy cast iron hinged door with a flap for inserting mail. Key hole and small handle on left side of door. Box had once been painted white. Embossed on top of door "BATES - HAWLEY PATENT JUNE 27, 1888". On flap for inserting mail "U.S. MAIL". Below flap "STYLE 3 PATENTED AUGUST 12, 1892 SIGNAL MAIL BOX CO. JOLIET, ILLINOIS APPROVED BY THE POSTMASTER GENERAL".Acquisition
