Description

War chest of Colonel Israel Robinson (see provenance below). Wooden box with parts nailed together and painted black with lid held by two hinges. Center front of box just below lid is a hole that probably once held a locking mechanism. Screwed onto the lower edge of the lid just above the hole is a metal plate with two protrusions with holes that was probably part of the locking mechanism. Inside the box is a note with the handwritten words "Field desk of Colonel Israel Robinson used in the Civil War-- He is buried in Hollywood Cemetery G.N.G. Funeral was at the Capitol" A handwritten account of Robinson's life was found in the bottom of the war chest and is in the accession file.
