Description

Leather and cloth hatbox for top hat catalog number 257. The box is elliptical to conform to the shape of the hat and has a curved lid with a handle and strap with brass fittings. One side of the strap is missing its brass keeper. Around the bottom of the box is brass reinforcement with four brass buttons on the bottom to prevent wear. There is also a round brass lock on one side for locking the keeper on the lid. Painted in fading white on one side is "B F F G Borro Ala". A paper label glued on the side has the picture of a hotel and "---M NATIONAL HOTEL, WASHINGTON ---" At the bottom is "--- TENNEY & CO. PROPRIETERS". The inside of the box and lid is covered with a blue and white material with a blue leaf design. Inside the box is a round form to stabilize the hat during transit. An old paper note taped to the top rim of the box contains the words: "BEAVER HAT & HAT BOX FROM PARIS, FRANCE 1840 COL. JOHN J. GRANTHAM".
