Description

Brass plaque commemorating the Charles Town Academy. Chartered in 1797, the academy stood on the site of the original Wright Denny Elementary School building, which was destroyed by fire in May 1972. Words on the plaque are "ERECTED 1933 BY TRUSTEES OF THE CHARLESTOWN ACADEMY CHARTERED 1797 THEIR LAST OFFICIAL ACT ACADEMY BUILDING - SITE OF PRESENT GRADED SCHOOL." Between the words "ACT" and "ACADEMY" is a raised likeness in brass of the academy building. Each corner has an opening through which the plaque was attached to the south wall at the southeastern corner of the original Wright Denny Elementary School building.
