According to an excerpt from The Lower Shenandoah Valley during the Civil War by Edward H. Phillips, 1959, Ph.D. dissertation, W. T. Leavell resigned from his parish in Charles City, Virginia, after the John Brown Raid and came to Jefferson County to be with his daughters, who had been staying with their grandmother at Walnut Grove.
