Stereograph of Mickie's GhostEntry/Object ID
IMG297Description
Guests at a party shocked when a ghost appears. "Be the Howly St. Patrick! - there's Mickie's Ghost" Copyright 1894
Many stereographs of the 19th century dealt with supernatural subject matter. However, this scene was meant to be humorous, not frightening. This image, published in 1894 by Strohmeyer & Wyman and distributed by Underwood & Underwood, exists in many hard copies--including in the Harper Stereograph Collection of the Boston Public Library--and is widely reproduced and distributed on the Internet. It is the second image in a series, the first of which (not in JCM's collection) depicts the deceased, Mickie O'Hoolihan, reclining in the background as his loved ones mourn his passing. This image is also an example of anti-Irish stereotypes that were common for the time: note the multiple jugs of liquor and the (barely visible) Catholic iconography in the photograph, as well as the exaggerated language of the caption. -Faithe McCreery 10/29/15Acquisition
