Bound ledger and field book kept by James M. Brown, surveyor, and father of S. Howell Brown, who was also a map maker; includes loose ephemera and pieces of paper. Ledger includes handwritten index at beginning of book; price of egg coal in November,1881; a new method for calculating areas; prescription for sick headache; directions for making coffee; matter relating to Winchester and Potomac Railroad Company; James Roper's will; hints on the proper management of the eating department at M_____(?) Meetings; memorandums respecting the surveyors of Jefferson County; a new equation in algebra; bank discount for 60 days; recipes; etc. Pages 136-137 and 146-147 are missing. The name "Benjamin Davis", Philadelphia is handwritten in ink inside front cover along upper edge.
