Upper photo: The original Market House was dedicated in 1786 by Charles Washington, brother of George Washington and founder of Charles Town, and was destroyed during the Civil War. Charles Washington Hall was rebuilt on the same site in 1874. Over the years a number of commercial enterprises occupied the first floor including the U. S. Post Office. The second floor was built as an auditorium and functioned as such until the Opera House was built on North George Street in 1910 and the second floor was converted into office spaces. (IMG12)
