In 1750 Washington purchased the 550 acre tract from Robert Rutherford and surveyed it himself. Although Washington referred to the property as his Bullskin farm, it was known as Rock Hall when it was purchased in 1818 by Lawrence Lewis. Thomas Hite Willis acquired the property in 1830 from Matthew Ranson. Rock Hall was destroyed by fire in 1906.Acquisition
