Scope and Content

Four-page letter dated Nov. 13, 1862, from a Union soldier, Wm. Sutliff, to his wife "Deares Lovina." He describes marching to Charles Town with 25,000 men, capturing a few soldiers and firing a few cannon shots. Also has envelope addressed to "Mrs. Marie L. Sutliff, Windsor Boom, Co., NY". He lived in Windsor, Broom County, New York. Sutliff was a member of Company B, 137th New York Infantry Regiment, which was stationed in Harpers Ferry from late September to early December, 1862. Included with the letter is a typed, annotated transcription by JCM historian Doug Perks.
