Collection of images related to John Brown: IMG3675-1: Photograph: Subject unknown (Number 4 written on back of photograph.) IMG3675-2: Photograph: May be one of the pikes brought to Harpers Ferry for John Brown's raid. The pistol is a Massachusetts Arms Company Maynard Primed .31 Caliber Percussion Belt Revolver. According to the museum historian, several of these were carried by Brown and his men. There are varying claims about which one Brown carried. IMG3675-3: Photograph: Subject unknown (Number 2 written on back of photograph.) IMG3675-4: Drawing: Artist unknown, showing John Brown comforting his wife Mary Ann Day. According to the museum historian, on December 1, 1859, Mary Ann Brown visited her husband in the Jefferson County Jail. Barred windows are visible behind and to the left of the seated couple. (Number 6 written on back of photograph.) IMG3675-5: Photograph: The spine of the Bible which John Brown had with him while incarcerated in the Jefferson County Jail. According to the museum historian, Brown presented the Bible to John Frederick Blessing on the day of his hanging, December 2, 1859. Blessing's widow, Emily Jane Grim Blessing, sold the Bible in 1893 to Frank Granger Logan of Chicago, IL. IMG3675-8: Photograph: Andrew Hunter, the Charles Town attorney selected by Judge Richard Parker to prosecute John Brown and his men. According to the museum historian, the original of this portrait originally hung in the library of Lawyer's Row on North George Street, Charles Town. When that building was demolished in 1919 to make room for the new Jefferson County Jail, the portrait was placed on the wall behind the judge's bench in the court room of the Jefferson County Court House. (Number 8 written on back of photograph.) IMG3675-9: Photograph: The John Brown scaffolding being reconstructed in 1893. According to the museum historian, following the last hanging in 1860 the lumber was given to Joseph Cockerill who used it to build a porch on a house owned by Daniel Sheetz on the northwest corner of East Liberty and North Lawrence Streets, Charles Town. The porch was removed and stored in the jail until it was sold to Augustus Brummell from Washington D. C. IMG3675-10: Photograph: Mary Ann Day Brown, John Brown's second wife and his widow. According to the museum historian, John Brown rented the farmhouse in the summer of 1859; gathered men and supplies there; and left from there in the evening of Sunday, October 16, 1859, to go to Harpers Ferry to capture the federal arsenal.
