Description

U. S. Springfield Armory Model 1898 Krag Bolt-Action Box Magazine Rifle, .30-40 caliber. Right side-loading, horizontal box magazine. Long range sight. 30" barrel; two barrel bands. Walnut stock, oil finished. Serial number: 188942. Rack number: "INY _ H25". Inspector's mark: "JSA 1899" (JSA was J. S. Adams, who was an inspector at the Springfield Armory from 1890-1920). Leather sling, one clasp is missing. "E. D. T." initials, signifying Edward Dabney Tolbert, are carved into stock on right side below the magazine. Rifle was used by Edward Dabney Tolbert during World War I. 330,000 of this model rifle were made at the Springfield Armory between 1898 and 1903.
