Collection of documents belonging to the Keyes family: K-1 Frederick Co., August Court, 1767. Order for an orphan, Benjamin Tucker, to be "bound out" to Humphry Keyes (Humphrey Keyes). (old # JCM # 1) K-2 Document cover, water-marked paper, date (modern ball-point) 1765. "John Boyles Articles of Agreement…" (old # JCM # 2) K-3 Indenture: May 7, 1763, between Gorshom Keyes (Gersham Keyes) and Humphry Keyes (Humphrey Keyes), relating to the sale of land near Vestal's Landing. (old # JCM # 3) K-4 Indenture: May 7, 1763, between Humphry Keyes (Humphrey Keyes) and Gershom Keyes (Gersham Keyes), relating to the sale of land near the mouth of the Shenandoah River. (old # JCM # 4) K-5 Indenture: March 1, 1763, between Gersham Keyes and Thomas Smith, relating to the sale of land near the mouth of the Shenandoah River. (old # JCM # 5) K-6 Deed dated December 13, 1764: between Thomas Caldwell and John Raredin; on reverse of same document, dated April 23, 1767, is an assignment by Raredin (John Rairdin) of his rights to Humphrey Keyes. (old # JCM # 6) K-7 Piece of paper, containing arithmetic calculations and hand-drawn plat of land; hand-written at each end: "Thomas Rutherford, Esq"; and hand-written at one end is what appears to be "Thomas Ruth". On reverse: "Humphrey Keyes Plat" and another arithmetic calculation. (old # JCM # 7) K-8 Deed, dated August 5, 1757, between Thomas Mayberry and Humphry Keys (sic) (Humphrey Keyes), relating to the sale of land lying near the mouth of Elk Branch. (old # JCM # 8) K-9 Indenture, dated Oct 4, 1765, between Hugh and Elizabeth West and Gersham Keyes, for the purchase of land in Winchester, VA. (old # JCM # 9) K-10 Statement, dated Sept 20, 1783, signed by John Keyes, giving up his right to certain lands owned by his father if his father will deed the land in Hampshire to him (John). (old # JCM # 11) K-11 Articles of agreement, dated Oct 27, 1765, between John Royse, of Hampshire County, and Gersham Keyes, regarding the purchase of land in Hampshire County. (old # JCM # 12) K-12 Plat, dated March 9, 1799, and signed by John Davenport: the courses and distances of land belonging to Thos. Keyes and the courses of the land belonging to Gersham Keyes. (old # JCM # 13) K-13 Document (undated): " A True State Concerning them Lands my Father Bought of Mr. Pritchard in Hampshire & the 400 acres he entered at hanging Roc", signed by "Hump Keyes" (Humphrey Keyes). (old # JCM # 17) K-16 Letter from officers of Richmond Grays to Jane Hammond Keyes (wife of Humphrey Keyes), Charlestown, Virginia, Dec 22, 1859, expressing appreciation for her hospitality during their stay in Charlestown at the time of John Brown's hanging and telling her that they were sending her a silver service in gratitude (for the silver service, see objects # 126, 127, and 128).
