Description

Several attempts to establish a rural delivery service had met with either lack of interest or lack of funding until 1896 when $30,000 was made available and Postmaster General William Lyne Wilson began an experiment with rural delivery in his home county. Mr. Wilson was born just outside of Middleway in Jefferson County and served as Postmaster General from 1895 to 1897. Upper: Image of William L. Wilson, date unknown.
