The first post office in Harpers Ferry was established June 5, 1837. A post office might have opened earlier as there are two additional, earlier, undated names on the appointed postmasters list. In addition, the federal armory began producing arms late in 1796 and a post office might have opened earlier to ensure prompt delivery of mail there.
