Description

It is unclear when the first post office was established in Middleway. The name of Samuel Stone appears first in the Record of Appointment of Postmasters but no date follows. Appearing next is William S. Maxwell who was appointed on January 11, 1830. The post office was closed and mail was transferred to Kearneysville Post Office on July 6, 1905. Upper: Daniel Fry House on Queen Street, once the home of Daniel Fry, who is considered by some to be Middleway's first postmaster. If so, this house is likely the location of an earlier post office established in 1807 in Middleway. Photographed by Susan Whitmore in 2020. (IMG3739) Lower: This house on Queen Street, built between 1750 and 1780, held the Middleway Post Office in the small brick section when Henry Smith was appointed postmaster in 1851.
